Honors Project
For my Honors Project in Child and Adolescent Psychology (PSY-B 360, Spring 2024), I explored gender dysphoria in adolescents through a clinical and cultural lens. This project involved an in-depth literature review, a visual presentation, and a recorded research summary to highlight diagnostic criteria, treatment approaches, and gaps in research. The experience significantly strengthened my research, analytical, and presentation skills, reinforcing my commitment to clinical psychology and psychopathology research.
Through this project, I strengthened my research and critical analysis skills by reviewing peer-reviewed articles on gender dysphoria, its diagnosis, and treatment. Exploring cultural and social influences deepened my understanding of psychological diversity and inclusivity, while identifying gaps in the literature helped refine my ability to critique existing research and suggest future directions.

My scientific communication skills also improved as I created a visually engaging PowerPoint and a recorded presentation, making complex psychological concepts more accessible. Writing in APA format reinforced my ability to structure and present research professionally.
Additionally, this project enhanced my ability to apply psychological theory to clinical practice. I gained insight into DSM-5 diagnostic criteria, treatment considerations, and the importance of culturally competent therapy. By connecting research to real-world applications, I developed essential skills for my future in clinical psychology.

This experience directly supports my goal of pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology, equipping me with research, analysis, and communication skills vital for graduate studies. Studying gender dysphoria broadened my understanding of psychopathology and clinical interventions, strengthening my ability to assess and support individuals with complex mental health needs.
Additionally, presenting my research improved my ability to convey psychological concepts clearly—an essential skill for teaching, advocacy, and clinical practice. This project reaffirmed my commitment to mental health research and evidence-based care, preparing me for future roles in both academic and clinical settings.
Reflection
This project was an immensely valuable experience that challenged me to think critically, research deeply, and communicate effectively. While I initially approached it from a clinical perspective, I left with a greater appreciation for the social and cultural dimensions of gender dysphoria. Furthermore, this experience reinforced my commitment to researching psychopathology and advancing evidence-based, inclusive mental health care.
As I prepare to reapply for PhD programs, I will continue refining my research skills, seeking clinical experience, and deepening my understanding of severe mental illnesses. This project stands as a testament to my growth as a researcher and future clinical psychologist.
